Start your Cameras

An excellent car photo will fuel a perfect portrait. Since our artists have never seen your car in person, they rely entirely on your photo to capture details and colors accurately. Use these guidelines for choosing an existing photo to use with your order, or follow our tips and tricks to get the perfect shot from scratch.

  • Mind the Details

Present your car exactly as you would like it painted. Our artists will assume you want to include dirt, pollen, rust spots, fading clearcoat, and other details you may prefer to omit. If possible, we recommend photographing a freshly washed and detailed car. Otherwise, please leave an order note to help our artists bridge the gap between the way your car looks in the photo and how you would like to remember it in your portrait. For example, "Please keep the dirt on my Jeep, but remove the rust spot on the fender"

  • Stay Focused

Use a smartphone or high quality camera to ensure the resolution is high enough to capture details accurately. Ensure the entire car is in focus in your image. If important details on your car are fuzzy, our artists may misinterpret them or miss them entirely.

  • Let There Be Light

  • Take your photo in daylight on a slightly overcast day. Photos taken at night in artificial light may give the wrong impression of your car's true paint color. Harsh shadows from direct sunlight may alter the artist's perception of your car's curves and lines. Avoid image filters, except to correct colors or highlight key details. If you can't get the color to show accurately, please provide a manufacturer paint code in the order notes. For example, "Please correct the paint color to Jeep Cherokee Gunmetal Pearl."

  • Find Your Car's Good Side

  • Decide which of your car's angles you want to feature - a head-on shot, a side profile, it's rear-end. Most cars look amazing from a 45 degree angle, like in many of our example portraits. Our artists will automatically center the car in the frame.

  • Leave it to the Pros

If you're feeling unsure about your photography skills, consider using a professional car photographer to find your car's best light and angle. Or ask permission to use photos of your car from a previous dealer or auction site listing.
